Abstract

ABSTRACTThis descriptive study aimed to explore stressful situation, stress, and coping, and investigate the relationship between stress level and coping in patients with colorectal cancer admitted during epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019. The stress appraisal and coping model (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) was applied for research conceptual framework. The seventy subjects were purposively selected following the inclusion criteria. The set of instruments composed of (1) the Demographic Data and Illness History, (2) the Interview Guide for Stressful Situation and Stress Level, and (3) the Coping Strategies Questionnaire, which were validated by three experts. The content validity index of the 2nd and the 3th part of the instruments were 1.0 and .93 respectively. The reliability of the Coping Strategies Questionnaire was examined and yielded the alpha of Cronbachs of .70. The qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results showed that the subjects appraised the stressful situation during epidemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 as (1) harmful and threat to health, and (2) impact to life lead to loss and powerlessness. The mean score of the stress was at a moderate level (M = 3.81, SD = 2.51). The most common coping method used was the palliative coping followed by problem-solving coping, and emotional management coping. Stress level was found to be a significantly positive correlation with the emotional management coping strategies (r = .502, p < 0.01), but significantly negative correlation with the problem-solving coping strategies (r = -.377, p < 0.01). The findings of this study were useful for nurses to develop supportive coping strategies for the patients with colorectal cancer.Keyword: Stress, Coping, Colorectal Cancer, Coronavirus Disease-2019
