Abstract

This study aims to investigate the seasonal variations of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic and chromium) in indoor and road dust sampled from an e-waste contaminated area in Thailand and to assess the associated health risks from exposure to lead, cadmium, arsenic and chromium. Dust samples were collected from bedrooms, living rooms and roads of all 19 individual households during the summer, rainy and winter seasons using vacuum cleaners. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was employed for measuring concentrations of the selected heavy metals in the collected samples. The data were analyzed descriptively using percentage, mean, and standard deviation (SD). Examining the significant differences in abundance of the heavy metals under different seasons by using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least significant difference (LSD). Moreover, the correlated health risks from heavy metal exposure via dust ingestion were assessed by calculating a hazard quotient (HQ) for individual metals, a cumulative hazard index (HI) for all metals, and an excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) for individual carcinogenic metals. The results suggested that the highest lead level in indoor and road dust was both observed in summer, with an average of 192.44 mg/kg and 79.58 mg/kg, respectively. The ANOVA statistical analysis showed significant seasonal variations of lead, cadmium, and chromium contamination in indoor dust. In addition, the LSD indicated significant differences in abundance of lead, cadmium and chromium between summer and rainy season, and rainy and winter season. For road dust, significant differences in chromium contents were found between summer and rainy season, while those in cadmium levels were seen between rainy and winter season. Health risk assessment of indoor dust ingestion revealed that the average HQ values for all heavy metals in male children, female children, male adults and female adults were well within the acceptable level of risk to people exposed to the studied metals (HQ?1). Nevertheless, the assessment of 19 individual houses demonstrated that male and female children were exposed above the acceptable risk values for lead (HQ>1), indicating a health risk of lead exposure (HI>1). According to the ELCR calculated for individual carcinogenic metals, male (4.02x10-4) and female children (4.53x10-4) were exposed above the acceptable cancer risk values for chromium (>10-4), implying a cancer risk of chromium exposure. Weather and climate conditions (i.e. temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed and rainfall) influencing heavy metal pollution in different seasons, should be considered in the effective measures to minimize the health risk of heavy metals in e-waste contaminated areas. Other risk reducing measures include promotion of self-protective behaviors and health risk management strategies focus on special monitoring and surveillance systems for children who are particularly vulnerable to heavy metal exposure via dust ingestion.
