Abstract

This research aimed to study the level of work-life balance and to study the relationship between nursing practice environment, servant leadership of head nurses and work-life balance among professional nurses in medical wards, Southern Thailand tertiary hospitals. The sample comprised 226 registered nurses working in medical wards. Data collection tools consisted of 1) demographic questionnaire, 2) work-life balance questionnaire, 3) nursing practice environment questionnaire, and 4) servant leadership of the head nurses questionnaire. The content validity of the latter three questionnaires were .95, .96 and .92 respectively. The reliability of the questionnaire 2, 3, and 4 were .93, .91 and .98, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product-moment coefficient and Spearman correlation coefficient. The results showed that the level of professional nurses' work-life balance was at a moderate level (M = 3.33, SD = 0.42). The relationship between nursing practice environment and work-life balance was significantly positive at a moderate level (r = .50, p < .01) and the relationship between Servant leadership of head nurses and work-life balance was significantly positive at the moderate level (rs = .43, p < .01). In conclusion, nursing administrators can use the results of this study to promote nursing practice environment and the servant leadership among the head nurses in order to increase the work-life balance of professional medical nurses.
