Abstract

Study of the effect of salinity on the cultivation of red grape seaweed or red sea grape Botryocladia sp. with different colored light to be useful information for propagation of this type of seaweed for ornamental aquatic plants market or as a guideline for substance extraction. The experiment was divided into the study of salinity with light in the laboratory to study growth and determine the amount of pigments, namely chlorophyll and carotenoids, and the study outside the laboratory in a 1.5-ton cement pond using baskets as containers for cultivation of different colors. Both areas used 3-centimeter cuttings without water sacs attached to a round white ceramic material with a diameter of 2 centimeters. In the laboratory, the experiment was conducted in a 2.5-liter glass bowl with a diameter of 10 centimeters and a height of 20 centimeters, which contained seawater with 4 different salinities: 25, 30, 35 and 40 ppt, with a volume of 1.5 liters. Each bowl was contained with 10 plants in ceramic, 3 replications, and placed on a shelf to receive white light, white red light, blue light and mixed colors from a fluorescent lamp. With a total light intensity of approximately 1,000 lux for 8 weeks, the algae were weighed, measured the length, and counted the number of sacs. The results showed that the red grape algae cuttings grown in 30, 35 and 40 ppt seawater had increased in weight and length. However, in 25 ppt seawater, the cuttings did not grow, were pale white, and started to die from the first week. Under white light, the algae had no difference in growth rate and size of sacs at 30, 35 and 40 ppt. However, the sacs fell off after the 4th week. As for the amount of pigments, it was found that under white and blue light, the highest chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments were given and there was no difference. In the experiment outside the laboratory, the color of the basket was not significantly different. The growth rate of cultured in cement ponds was 0.25-0.34 percent per day. However, because the red grape algae is quite expensive, its cultivation should be promoted. The red sea grape Botryocladia sp. should be grown using cuttings without sacs and grown at a salinity of 35 ppt because it grew well and the sacs are durable.
