Abstract
The primary purpose of this study is to comparatively examine the impacts of
tsunami disaster in 2004, the progress in recovery since then and preparedness activities undertaken in three tourist municipalities located in the Andaman Coast of Thailand. Data were collected employing in-depth and focus group interview techniques. The interviews were conducted with 27 Key informants who were actively involved in disaster management at both policy and operational levels. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results of the research showed that:
1. Pang Nga Province was highly affected by the tsunami disaster in 2004 in two
aspects including live loss and property damage. Phuket was highly affected in terms of total loss.
Krabi Province received the lowest impacts compared to the other two provinces.
2. In terms of recovery, the three municipalities were similar in recovery policy.
However, the actual progress in recovery differed as the three were different in terms of municipality's managerial ability and resilience capacity of the communities.
3. In terms of preparedness, the three municipalities have done similar projects or
activities. The progress of preparedness, however, was different due to the differences in capacity, size, type, and the level of tourism reputation of that city.
