Abstract
This thesis aims to study the relationship between language and environmental
problem discourse from online headlines during 2019-2020. The data used in the study
consisted of online headlines on environmental problems from five news agencies,
namely, Thai PBS, Thairath, Prachatai, Daily News and Matichon. The data were
collected in the period of two years of 2019-2020. The theory of critical analysis
discourse was applied as a guideline for the study.
According to the study results of the subject characteristics that presented
environmental news, it revealed that the online headlines used four language using
strategies including 1) The vocabulary selection strategy: The uses of vocabularies were
divided into five types namely the uses of name and alias, kinship representation,
animal names, verbs and quantifiers. 2) The sentence structure strategy: The uses of
question sentences were divided into two types namely the uses of question
sentences for censure and recourse. 3) The pragmatics strategy: The uses of referrals,
verbal irony, modality, postulate or presupposition, and conversational implicature. 4)
The metaphor strategy: It could be found the conceptual metaphor that compared
problems of environment and animals in three aspects including the conceptual
metaphors that compared environmental problems as an enemy, an object and
animals in the ecosystem as a human. Additionally, it was found that the different
language using strategies that from online headlines regarding environmental problems
reflected data sets or concepts about environmental problems as the consequences
from human actions. From the practical study on discourse, it was found out that the language
presented through online environmental news agencies on environmental issues was
directly related to media institutions. Therefore, the uses of the language in presenting
news had the purposes arise from the editorial departments as staff members and
personnel of institutions or media organizations who were function of selecting,
adapting and adding various texts used in the news presentation in order to make the
news interesting to readers or audiences and be careful in presenting news relating to
government agencies or organizations. For social and cultural practices, there were
various discourses reflected in the uses of languages, such as cultivating ideas or
environmental knowledge through textbooks, laws and government policies in order
to enable everyone to understand that environmental problems caused from actions
of human, which means the general public.
The cultivation of the fundamental knowledge on environmental problems
that has finally led to comes to news presentations is the reinforcement of the idea
of managing environmental problems as human-caused problems. Heretofore, it
became an ideology that represents humans as the main cause or factor that destroy
the environment. The human here from the news presentations is the general public
or people who are reading the news. While those who solve environmental problems
are government agencies. Such power relations reflected problems and solutions that
led to a thought reflection on environmental problems for those who read the online
news.
