Abstract

Abstract

This research is aimed to study the development potential of ecological resources in order to be the guideline on Koh-Mak ecotourism promotion. Five indices of potential ecological resources, i.e. 1) general value and environmental management, 2) land ecological resource value, 3) aquatic ecological resource value, 4) belief and faith value and 5) destruction risk; were investigated. The site surveys and water samples were collected. Weighting score equation were used for calculation and the contributory factors in community ecosystem were determined. The results of potential assessment showed the biodiversity of aquatic animals, the highest potential ecological resource in all indices and is the main profit for local people, at the average value of 4.4. It could be the indication of the abundant food chain in Koh-Mak. The main economic aquatic animal, i.e. Plotosus canius, Heteromycteris hartzfeldii, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, and Metapenaeus brevicornis were mostly found. The local vegetation, the secondarily mostly found at the average value of 4, were the conventional plant, e.g. sugar palm, cashew nuts and Parkia speciosa, etc. The same kinds of bird found in Khu Khut Water Fowl Park were found at the potential ecological resource of 3.7. The lowest average value at 1.6 was the community water management. The results of potential assessment were presented to local people in the community through brain storming activities. Eight tourism activities on two tourism routes, both land and water tourism routes, were proposed for the development guideline. From the study, the learning of artisanal fishery was the highlight among the proposed tourism activities.
