Abstract
This predictive research aimed to study the level of self-care behavior and to study factors predicting self-care behavior of prisoners with schizophrenics at prison and correctional institutions. The sample comprised 96 patients with schizophrenia who were sentenced in prison at correctional institutions in prison administrative regions 9. The research instrument consisted of 5 parts: (1) a demographic data and illness questionnaire, (2) a cognitive status assessment form for patients with schizophrenia, (3) a self-esteem questionnaire for patients with schizophrenia, (4) a Social Support Scale for Patients with Schizophrenia, and (5) a Self-Care Behavior questionnaire for Patients with Schizophrenia. The content validity of the instruments was verified by three experts. The content validity index of part 3 to 5 was 1.0, 1.0, and 10 respectively. The reliability of part 3 to 5 was tested yielding a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .72, .89 and .83 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The predictability was analyzed using multiple regression analysis with standard
The results showed that the self-care behaviors score of patients with Schizophrenia serving in prisons and correctional institutions was at a high level (M = 77.63, S.D. = 0.92). Predictive factor could explain 42.1 percent of the variance (R 2= .421, p < .05). The factors that significantly predicted self-care behaviors were cognitive status (β = 0.239, t = 2.907, p < .01) and social support (β = 0.478, t = 4.495, p < .01). The results of this study could be used as a basis information to development of nursing models to further promote self-care behaviors.
