Abstract
Abstract
The effect of growing media on growth of rubber rootstock seedlings of
RRIM 600 was studied using seven different media including sandy clay loam (control), soil: rice husk charcoal (1:1), soil: coir dust (1:1), soil: coir dust: rice husk charcoal (1:1:1), soil: coir dust: rice husk charcoal (1:2:1), soil: coir dust: rice husk charcoal (1:1:2) and soil: coir dust: rice husk charcoal (1:2:2). The results showed that application of coir dust and rice husk charcoal mixture with soil in different ratios decreased weight of the planting material by 23.00 to 38.60% compared with sandy clay loam (control). The growing media composed of soil: coir dust: rice husk charcoal (1:1:1) provided the best seedling growth performance at 6 months after transplanting with stem diameter of 8.62 mm and average planting material of 1.27 kg. The effect of different container structures on growth of rubber rootstock seedling was investigated by three types of different growing containers including smooth wall cylindrical plastic tube size 3"x14", without plastic rod inside and the container glued with two and four plastic rods inside, respectively and filled with soil and mixture of soil: coir dust and rice husk charcoal (1:1:1). Similar seedling shoot growth performance among the three container types was found at 4, 6 and 8 months after transplanting in both soil and mixture of soil: coir dust and rice husk charcoal (1:1:1). However, percentages of branch roots dry weight and fine roots dry weight of seedlings grown in containers with 2 and 4 plastic rods glued inside increased at the upper part of root zone with the reduction of circling root dry weight of 21.98-27.16 and 4.71-8.70% in soil and soil mixture, respectively. Consequently, application of the growing container structures of 2 and 4 plastic rods inside filled with soil mixture of soil: coir dust: rice husk charcoal (1:1:1) could be used as an appropriate alternative protocol for production of high quality rubber rootstocks along with the lower planting material weight with convenient transportation to the planting area.
