Abstract

The aims of this research were 1) to study the adjustment, emotional quotient, stress, self-esteem and coping of students. 2) to compare the students’ adjustment classified by gender, age, yearof study, GPA and marital status of parents. 3) to study factors related to students’ adjustment were emotional quotient, stress, self-esteem and coping. 4) to study factors affecting students’ adjustment. The 309 High Certificate students in three southern border provinces were selected as participants by using stratified random sampling for collecting data. The instruments used were adjustment questionnaire, emotional quotient evaluation form, stress scale, self-esteem scale and coping scale. The statistics used for analyzing the data were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that 1) the students’ adjustment was at a lower level, students’ emotional quotient was at subnormal level, students’ self-esteem was at moderate level, students’ stress was at high level and students’ coping was at low level. 2) the students’ adjustment with different gender, year of study and GPA were not significantly different in adjustment. Students’ Marital status of parents and age were significantly different in adjustment. 3) the positive correlation between students’ adjustment and emotional quotient, self-esteem statistical significce at .05 and coping statistical significce at .01. The students’ adjustment did not have correlation with the stress. 4) According to multiple regression analysis, there were four main variables being able to predict the students’ adjustment. These variables were emotional quotient, self esteem, stress, and coping. All of the variables possess 21.5% of ability to predict the students’ adjustment. The standard score obtained from the multiple regression analysis were included in the equation. Then the equation being able to predict the students’ adjustment in this study was: adjustment = 0.45 emotional quotient, +0.42 self-esteem, -0.40 stress, +0.24 coping.
