Abstract
The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to study
the effect of using a simulation-based learning (SBL) program toward enhancing
knowledge and communication skills for patient safety of perioperative nurses. Twelve
professional nurses working in the operating room, Trang Hospital, were purposively
recruited. The instruments used in the research were 1) the experimental instrument
consisting of SBL program to enhance knowledge and communication skills among
perioperative nurses in 3 scenarios, validated by 5 experts and 2) the tools used to
collect data: demographic questionnaires, safety communication knowledge
assessment, and communication skill observation for patient safety. The
communication knowledge assessment was validated by 5 experts. The content
validity index was 0.81. The reliability test was done using Kuder-Richardson 20 and
yielded a value of 0.80. Data were analyzed using frequency and Wilcoxon Signed Rank
Test.
The result showed that the knowledge and communication skill
of perioperative nurses after using the SBL program was significantly increased at .05
(Z = -2.836, p = .005). Among perioperative nurses had 91.67 percent had an increase
in knowledge on cooperation and 83.33 percent had increased on promotion of
continuous care. After using the SBL program for enhancing knowledge and
communication skills required for safety, all nurses had full scores on practice of all
items of “patient monitoring” and “maintaining continuity of care during care
transition”; and 83.33 percent had full scores on the “aspect of coordination of care”.
This research shows that SBL program can enhance
perioperative nurses’ knowledge and communication skills for patient safety.
