Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive research was to examine the level and the relationship between work related stress, social support, and resilience among emergency nurses working in unrest areas of the southern border provinces. One hundred and seventy-two emergency nurses were recruited. The questionnaires consisted of (1) Work Related Stress Questionnaire, (2) Social Support Questionnaire, and (3) Resilience Scale Questionnaire. The content validity of the questionnaire was examined by 3 experts. The reliability of those questionnaires yielded a Cronbach's alpha coefficients of .94, 91, and .96, respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, mean percentage, standard deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results showed that: 1. The overall mean score of work related stress was at a moderate level (M = 2.95, SD = 65). When identifying each dimension, the dimension of work overload and time pressure had at the highest mean score and the dimension of organizational and management problems had at the lowest mean score. 2. The overall mean score of social support was at a high level (M = 75.97, SD = 7.60). When identifying each dimension, the dimension of emotional support was at a high level. Appraisal support, informative support, and instrumental support were at moderate levels. 3. The overall mean score of resilience was at a moderate level (M = 75.38, SD = 10.39) When identifying each dimension, the dimension of authenticity had the highest mean score and the dimension of perseverance had at the lowest mean score. 4. Work related stress had a moderate negatively correlation with resilience (r= -34, p < .001), and social support had a weak positively correlation with resilience (r - .27. p < .001). These data indicated that work related stress is the important variable, which impacts on resilience. Therefore, organizations and institutions should develop guidelines to promote resilience, reduce work related stress and maintain a high level of social support of emergency nurses working in unrest areas of the southern border provinces.
