Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effect of self-efficacy promoting program through family participation upon food consumption knowledge, food behaviors and nutritional status among upper-primary school wasting Muslim children. The sample consisted of 50 wasting Muslim children. The first group of 25 wasting Muslim children students was assigned as the control group, gaining knowledge and health promotion activity, based on standard care. The other 25 Children were assigned as the experimental group, receiving self-efficacy promoting program through family participation procedure in week 1 - 8. The instruments comprised 2 sets. The first set of data collection instrument consisted of (1) demographic questionnaire (of family and school-aged children), (2) the self-efficacy in food consumption questionnaire (SeQ), (3)the food consumption knowledge questionnaire (FkQ) and (4) the food behavior questionnaire (FbQ) of the school-aged children, and (5) the family participation questionnaire (FpQ). The second set was the experimental instruments that covered the self-efficacy promoting program (through family participation), a guide book, “named Ibadah”, that followed “Tay-Yip” principles, telephone follow-up tracking record, and a video guide to promote Islamic diets. All of these instruments were validated for content validity by 3 experts. The content validity of the entire toolkit (S-CVI) was measured, obtaining a S-CVI value of 1. In addition, The CVI of each tool, namely the self-efficacy questionnaire (SeQ), the food consumption knowledge questionnaire (FkQ), and the food behavior questionnaire (FbQ), were 0.89, 1.00, and 0.96 respectively. The SeQ, FbQ and FpQ were tested for reliability using Cronbach’s alpha, yielding 0.87, 0.83, and 0.75 respectively. The FkQ was tested using Kuder - Richardson 20 (KR - 20) and yielded the value of 0.85. Results: Among the experiment group: the mean scores after implementation of self-efficacy (Se), food consumption knowledge (Fk), and food behavior (Fb), including body weight of the school-aged wasting Muslim children were significantly greater that the baseline mean scores, at p < 0.05. When compared the mean scores of Se, Fk, and Fb between the experimental and control groups, data revealed that all of the the mean scores of Se, Fk, and Fb were statistically greater than those of the control group, at p< 0.05. However, the mean scores of body weight among two group were non - statistically significant difference. The study results indicate that the self - efficacy promoting program through family involvement could be utilized to promote self - efficacy and to modify their food consumption behaviors. Consequently the wasting school-aged Muslim children were able to change their food consumption behaviors and improve their weight gain. The program should be tested in other settings to ensure it effectiveness.
