Abstract
The objective of this action research was to develop and study the effect of using development professional nurses' competency model in urgent management of acute stroke patients by simulation-based learning. The participants were 20 nurses with 2 years of experience. The tools consisted of: 1) the research instrument, which was a simulation of acute stroke patients; 2) the data collection tools, which comprised the knowledge assessment form, competency assessment form, and a satisfaction for development of professional nurses’ competency model questionnaire. Content validity was checked by 5 experts which was equal to .96, .96, 1.00 and .96 respectively. The reliability of the satisfaction questionnaire yielded a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of .97. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis.
The results showed that there are 3 stages in the development of professional nurses' competency model in urgent management of acute stroke patients: 1) the knowledge preparation phase in the urgent management of acute stroke patients; 2) the action stage for urgent management of acute stroke patients according to the simulation scenario; and 3) the evaluation stage. The results of using development professional nurses' competency mode found that all participants satisfied in criteria in terms of knowledge of drug administration and decision making and the ability to perform urgent management for drug administration and decision making. Satisfaction with the overall performance of the development model was at the highest level (M = 4.58). Nursing administrators can use the research findings as a guideline to promote nurses' competency in caring for stroke patients.
