Abstract
This quasi-experimental study aimed to test the effect of progressive muscular
relaxation with husband support on stress of teenage pregnant women. The sample consisted of 50 teenage pregnant women who were receiving antenatal care at a community hospital in Narathiwat province. They were purposively selected and assigned into the experimental group (n = 25) or the control group (n = 25). The control group received regular antenatal care service, while the experimental group received the progressive muscular relaxation with husband support in addition to regular antenatal care service. The research instruments consisted of (1) teaching plan of knowledge related to stress of teenage pregnant women, (2) teaching plan of progressive muscular relaxation, (3) teaching plan of husband support, (4) slides for teaching, and (5) handbook of progressive muscular relaxation with husband support. The data-collecting instruments consisted of (1) personal data form, (2) progressive muscular relaxation practice form, (3) telephone follow-up form, and (4) self-scoring stress questionnaire developed by the Department of Mental Health. Validity of the instruments in this study was approved by three experts. The reliability of the self-scoring stress questionnaire was examined using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, yieding a value of .81. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard devition, and t-test.
The results revealed that:
1) Teenage pregnant women who received the progressive muscular relaxation with husband support had a mean score of stress after intervention (M = 15.00, SD = 1.68) significantly lower than before intervention (M = 22.08, SD = 1.73) (p < .001).
2) Teenage pregnant women who received the progressive muscular relaxation with husband support had a mean score of stress (M = 15.00, SD = 1.68) significantly lower than that of teenage pregnant women who received regular antenatal care service (M = 22.20, SD = 1.75) (p < .001).
The results showed that the effect of progressive muscular relaxation with husband support could reduce stress of teenage pregnant women. Therefore, it is recommended that the progressive muscular relaxation with husband support should be applied in caring for teenage pregnant women who have stress.
