Abstract
Abstract
This quasi-experimental, single group pre-posttest time series design research
aimed to study the effect of the six weeks behavior modification and environmental health management program on employees' blood lipid control behaviors and total cholesterol level. The social ecological model, Ottawa charter health promotion strategies, and trans-theoretical model of change were employed to design program activities and educational materials. The program was validated by three experts. Blood lipid control behaviors questionnaire was tested for internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.84). The participants were all 44 employees of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand who reported hyperlipidemia. Baseline blood lipid control behaviors and total cholesterol were collected during their annual health screening. Changes in blood lipid control behaviors score and total cholesterol level at 6th weeks (control period) and 12th week (intervention period) were analyzed using one way repeated measures ANOVA and comparing the different pairs with Bonferroni.
The results revealed that there was significant improvement in total cholesterol level after participation in the program (p<0.05). Significant increase in lipid control behavior score was found at 6th week (p<0.05). However, no significant change in lipid control behavior score was observed after intervention (at 12th week). The possible threats to research validity were discussed. This program provides supportive environments and opportunities for employees
to engage in health behavior change activities and also has the potential to improve their cholesterol level.
