Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate: 1) levels of attitude toward the Big Five personality traits and public service motivation effects on job performance of municipal employees in Pattani Province; 2) the Big Five effects on job performance of municipal employees in Pattani Province; and 3) public service motivation effects on job performance of municipal employees in Pattani Province. The sample group was 340 municipal employees in Pattani Province calculated using Taro Yamane formula (Taro Yamane, 1970: 580-581); the instruments were a questionnaire and interview; and the data were analyzed with frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, mode, skewness, kurtosis, correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The study found that the overall level of opinion on the Big Five among municipal employees in Pattani Province was at a high level (Mode = 4.00). The overall level of opinion on public service motivation was also at a high level (Mode = 4.00), and the overall level of job performance of municipal employees in Pattani Province was at a very high level (Mode = 4.00). When considering the relationship between the interaction effects of the Big Five: extrovert personality, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, openness to experience and public service motivation: interest in public policy formation, commitment to public interest, empathy and self-sacrifice which were independent variables influencing job performance on municipal employees, it was found that these arrays were related to job performance of municipal employees at a statistically significant level of .001 (F-value = 44.674, p< .001). They could explain the variance of job performance among municipal employees at 54.9 percent (R2 = 549). Agreeableness had positive influence on job performance of municipal employees at a statistically significant level of .05 while conscientiousness had positive influence at a statistically significant level of .001. In addition, regarding public service motivation, commitment to public interest had positive influence on job performance at statistically significant level of .001. Similarly, empathy and self-sacrifice had positive influence on job performance at statistically significant level of .001
