Abstract
This research aimed 1) to compare the students' English reading ability before and after being taught using authentic materials 2) to study the students' English vocabulary knowledge before and after being taught using authentic materials 3) to study the students' English vocabulary retention after being taught using authentic materials and 4) to study the students' satisfaction towards teaching English reading skills using authentic materials. The subjects were 40 Matthayomsuksa 5 students studying at one of secondary schools in Trang. They were selected by the purposive sampling. The research was carried out for ten weeks for twenty class periods. The instruments were ten lesson plans, an English reading ability test, an English vocabulary knowledge, English vocabulary retention test and a satisfaction questionnaire. The data were statically analyzed by means, standard deviation and t- test for dependent samples.
The findings revealed that 1) the student's English reading ability was significantly improved at the level of .01. 2) the students' English vocabulary knowledge was significantly improved at the level of .01. 3) the students' English vocabulary retention mean scores after the 2 weeks and 4 weeks experiment were not significantly different at the level of .01. and 4) the students' satisfaction towards teaching English reading skills using authentic materials was at a good level. It can be signified that using authentic materials can enhance the students' English reading ability, English vocabulary knowledge and English vocabulary retention.
