Abstract
This descriptive qualitative research aimed (1) to describe (1) the experiences of using Information and communication technologies (ICTs) in nursing administration by head nurses and (2) to explore the problems of using ICTs for nursing administration. The informants were 25 professional nurses who were purposively selected an had worked as head nurses in a tertiary hospital for least 2 years. Data were collected by in-depth interviews. Demographic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The results showed that:
1. The experiences in using ICTs of head nurses in the tertiary hospital for nursing administration had 3 parts: (1) personnel management such as planning for nursing workforce management, scheduling and managing compensation, (2) driving quality of nursing care such as managing information that indicates quality and risks management, and 3) organizational communications such as online meetings, Important notification, and paper communication replacement.
2. The issues and problems of using ICTs for nursing administration as perceived by head nurses consisted of 5 issues: (1) enhancing the efficiency of nursing administration, (2) developing their IT competency, (3) Increasing nurses’ participation in managing nursing data, (4) insufficiency of the IT support system demand, and (5) developing anxiety among head nurses at the beginning of the change and changing of life balance changed.
The results of this study are useful in nursing administration to develop ITCs competency and to be incorporated in the procedure for selection of new nurses.
