Abstract
The purpose of this research is to examine the levels of disaster management knowledge of village leaders in Sabayoi District, Songkhla Province. Data were collected through survey questionnaires which were distributed to 227 village leaders. Data obtained from survey questionnaires were then analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Hypotheses were tested using t-test and F-test. Results from data analysis showed that, overall, village leaders’ disaster management knowledge was at a moderate level. When considering in detail, data analysis revealed that the level of hazard mitigation knowledge was highest, followed by disaster preparedness and emergency response knowledge. In terms of disaster recovery knowledge, however, data showed that village leaders in these areas had the lowest level. When comparing the level of disaster knowledge by various factors, data showed that village leaders with different religions and positions were different in terms of disaster management knowledge. However, village leaders with different age, education, occupation, number of year in current position, disaster experience and previous training were not different in terms of disaster management knowledge.
Based on such findings, it is recommended that, public agencies related to disaster management should increase knowledge and skills in disaster management for village leaders in Sabayoi District, especially in terms of disaster recovery so that they are capable of administering recovery activities such as property and infrastructural damage assessment and regulations for providing aids for disaster victims. They should also have more knowledge about disaster response activities such as search and rescue, evacuation, sheltering, and mass care. Such disaster management knowledge can be provided through trainings or exercises at least twice a year. Moreover, village leaders from all religions and positions should be encouraged to participate in such trainings and exercises so that they all have the knowledge and skills that enhance their ability to perform disaster management activities more effectively.
