Abstract
This research aims at studying and analyzing the adaptation techniques of the novel "Chaochunphomhorm Niratphrathatinkhwaen" into a modern play for the target audience. Another aim of this research is comparing the storytelling and differences in the structure of the adapted modern play with the storytelling and structure of its original work.
The findings have uncovered the five techniques used in the adaptation of the novel into the modern play: 1) sequencing events in chronological order for the audience to understand the story easily; 2) proceeding the play with conflicts among characters and in the characters' minds to arouse the audience's attention; 3) including dancing and singing to engage and excite the audience; 4) inserting jokes to attract the audience; 5) incorporating current social issues into the play to make the audience connected to the characters better.
With reference to the storytelling and differences in the structures of the adapted modem play and its original work, it is apparent that the author of the modern play used the objective narration to narrate the story. In other words, the audience could perceive the story through conversations and behaviors of the characters; this is in contract with the author of the novel who narrated the story as the first person narrator and through the characters' stream of consciousness. In connection with the comparison of the structures of the modem play and novel, it turns out the modem play's author retained the novel's structure in the adaptation, however only with change in his sequencing of events in chronological order. Although he maintained the personality and roles of main characters, he added new characters to narrate the story on behalf of the novel's author. Further, he continued using some original conversations believed to communicate best with the audience, while at the same time adapted and simplified some to be of daily conversations. To make the play easy to understand, some dramatic scenes were added, while maintaining important scenes of the novel. Overall, the play's author successfully retains the novel's theme, that is, keeping words is an essential component of moral qualities and great human dignity.
