Abstract

The objective of this research is to study trade potential and opportunity for export Thai beef production in the People's Republic of China (Yunnan Province). Between 2005 and 2015, Thailand's beef cattle population decreased by approximately 3.38 million. Thailand imported 125,176 live cattle from Myanmar in 2015 for the purpose of fattening and re-export to the People's Republic of China through Laos, which accounted for 93 percent and Vietnam followed with 5 percent. With good breeds of cattle and skill, Thailand has trade potential and opportunity for exports Thai beef production to the markets in the People's Republic of China. In the People's Republic of China, consumer behavior on Thai beef is favorable and Thai beef is popular for their beef stew. Thailand has a good geographical location for developing beef cattle logistics and supply chain management for imports and exports. In addition, Thai government is supportive of the beef industry. Moreover, the People's Republic of China has demand of beef cattle throughout the year. The special demand periods are the Chinese New Year (December-January), labor holidays (September-October) and Aidil fitri and Eidha day (September-December). The exports use the border trade system in two main routes. First, shipping, about 70 percent, passed through the Chiang Saen (Mekong River) to the Sabai Pier, Myanmar, before entering the People's Republic of China. Second, surface transportation, 30 percent, was through Chiang Khong (Chiang Rai), on the R3A route, to Laos and then went through the checkpoint in Xishuangbanna to the People's Republic of China. Approximately S percent of beef cattle will be sold in Xishuangbanna and about 35 percent to the Muslim market in Kunming, Yunnan. The remaining 60 percent of beef cattle will be sold to the cities of the People's Republic of China.
