Abstract
This quasi-experimental study aimed to determine the effects of
the Educative upportive Nursing System Program on caregivers' capabilities in caring for Muslim stroke patients, and on the patients' abilities to perform Activities of daily living (ADL). The sample consisted of 64 caregivers and newly diagnosed stroke patients, recruited through purposive sampling according to specific inclusion criteria.
They were assigned into two groups, experimental and control groups, with 32 per group. The experimental group received the Caregivers Educative Supportive Nursing System Program, developed by the researcher based on Orem's educative supportive nursing system theory, for eight weeks, and the control group received the usual care. The research instruments comprised: 1) experiment instrument which was the Caregivers Educative Supportive Nursing System Program, and 2) data collection instruments including a demographic data and health information of caregivers and Muslim stroke patients form, caregiver capabilities in caring for Muslim stroke patients assessment form, and the Barthel Activities of Daily Living (ADL) index of Muslim stroke patients assessment form. All instruments were validated for their content validity by three experts. The reliability of the caregiver capabilities in caring for Muslim stroke patients assessment form was tested by 20 caregivers of stroke patients using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which yielded the value of 0.97. The reliability of the Barthel ADL index assessment form was tested in 20 Muslim stroke patients using the Inter-rater reliability, which yielded the inter-rater reliability (IRR) of
0.94. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test and independent t-test.
Results revealed that the mean scores of caregivers' capabilities in
caring for Muslim stroke patients and of stroke patient ability in ADLs in the
experiment group at posttest were both significantly higher than at pretest (t = -34.73,
p < .00; t = -26.72, p < .00). As well, the mean score of caregivers' capabilities in
caring for Muslim stroke patients and stroke patient ability in ADLs at posttest of the experimental group were significantly higher than that of the control group (t = 16.86,
p < .00; t = 7.93, p < 00).
Findings of this study indicate that the Caregivers Educative Supportive
Nursing System Program is effective in promoting caregivers' capabilities in caring for stroke patients and thus improves stroke patient's abilities in activities daily living.
It could be applied in new Muslim stroke patients after discharge from hospital.
However, this program may need to be modified to be utilized in other contexts.
