Abstract
The aim of this study on developing paragraph writing ability focusing on its components among students taking Communication Skills course was to investigate errors, improve ability, and compare ability in paragraph writing in terms of components of the paragraph among students between before and after they had taken the course using an evaluation form on paragraph writing for each component based on the authentic assessment concept. O'Malley and Pierce's analytical scoring rubric (1996: 94) was employed; the levels of evaluation in the rubric were classified as 1 = To be improved, 2 = Passed, 3 = Good, and 4 = Very Good. The study was conducted with 1,707 paragraphs written by 114 students.
The analytical scoring rubric consisted of three parts: components of the paragraph, paragraph coherence, and linguistic features. The three parts were analyzed in terms of errors in writing a paragraph, and development of ability in writing a paragraph. The results of the analyses revealed that in components of the paragraph, errors accounted for 55.3 percent and development accounted for 68.33 percent; in paragraph coherence, 64.9 percent and 75.1 percent; and in linguistic features, 65.31 percent and 72.3 percent, respectively. Regarding comparison of paragraph writing ability focusing on its components of students between before and after taking the Communication Skills course based on self-evaluation using a paragraph evaluation form which was an analytical scoring rubric as authentic assessment, it was found that the students' ability in paragraph writing was significantly improved at the level 0.01.
