Abstract

This study aimed to investigate 1) the prevalence of mental health problems in individuals affected by political unrest in the southern border provinces; 2) the relationship between personal and situational factors and mental health problems of the affecte d individuals; and 3) factors affecting mental health problems in the affected individuals. The area scope of this study was the southern border provinces, including Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla. The samples were individuals affected by the poli tical unrest in the southern border provinces selected by the Violencerelated Mental Health Surveillance database of Songkhla Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital. Data were collected by the Psychological Impact Scale for Crisis Events developed by the Dep artment of Mental Health, Ministry of Health, to assess risks among the affected individuals. The data were analyzed by the R program, frequency, percentage, chisquare test, odds ratio, and logistic regression. Results are as follows: 1. The overall preva lence of mental health problems in individuals affected by political unrest in the southern border provinces suggested that 75.96% of the samples had no mental health problems, whereas 24.04% did. 2. The factors related to mental health problems of the affected individuals included sex and death of a relative with statistical significance at the .001 level; age and being a relative of an injured individual with statistical significance at the .05 level; and residential area and being inflicted with an injury with statistical significance at the .01 level. 3. The factors affecting mental health problems in the affected individuals based on the logistic regression analysis at the .05 significance level were sex, residential area, and being a relative of an inj ured individual. Dimensionally, female affected individuals were 1.50 times more vulnerable to mental health problems than male. On residential areas, those living in areas with a high occurrence rate of political unrest incidents were reportedly 2.21 time s more vulnerable to mental health problems than those living in areas with a moderate occurrence rate; those living with a moderate occurrence rate were 2.04 times more vulnerable than those living with a low occurrence rate; and those living with a low o ccurrence rate were 1.21 times more vulnerable than those living in areas with no occurrence of incidents. Furthermore, those who were relatives of injured individuals were reportedly 1.80 times more vulnerable to mental health problems than those who were not. Finally, the factors affecting mental health problems in the affected individuals at the .001 significance level included the death of a relative. More specifically, those who loss their relatives from political unrest incidents were 2.09 times more vulnerable to mental health problems than those who did not.
