Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effect of education program with recitation of the Zikrullah on fear, pain, and duration of first stage labor among primiparous Muslims who were receiving care from an antenatal clinic and delivering at Bannangsata Hospital in Yala province during July 2021 to January 2022. Sixty participants who met the inclusion criteria were equally assigned an experimental group (30 subjects) who received the education program with recitation of the Zikrullah, and a control group (30 subjects) who received usual nursing care. The research instruments comprised three parts, including (1) the intervention, which was the education program with recitation of the Zikrullah, (2) the monitoring instrument, which was the recording recitation of the Zikrullah, and (3) The instruments for data collection consisting of the demographic data, pregnancy information and delivery information, and visual analogue scales (VAS). The intervention instrument and the monitoring instrument were content validated by three experts. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square and independent t-test for demographic data, and comparison of the means of studies variable was evaluated using the independent t-test and the Mann-Whitney U test.
The results revealed that:
1. The experimental group had a mean score of fear during in the active phase (M = 51.57, SD = 17.13) statistically significantly less than that of the control group (M = 83.80, SD = 13.15) (t = 8.17, p < .001), and a mean score of fear during in the transitional phase (M = 52.37, SD = 25.90) statistically significantly less than that of the control group (M = 92.17, SD = 9.44) (t = 7.91, p < .001)
2. The experimental group had a mean score of pain during in the active phase (M = 74.03, SD = 13.67) statistically significantly less than that of the control group (M = 84.57, SD = 12.76) (t = 3.08, p < .001), and a mean score of pain during in the transitional phase (Mdn = 91.00, n = 30) statistically significantly less than that of the control group (Mdn = 99.50, n = 30) (U = 304.50, Z = -2.21, p < .05)
3. The experimental group had a duration of the first stage of labor
(M = 590.70, SD = 289.19) shorter than that of the control group (M = 653.47, SD = 302.11) (t = .82, p > .05) but the difference was not statistically significant.
The results showed that the education program with recitation of the Zikrullah could help to reduce fear and labor pain in the first stage of labor in primiparous Muslims. Thus, the nurses should apply this intervention for primiparous Muslims.
