Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative research was to describe the
management of sickness among the Maniq living in Pa Bon District, Phatthalung
Province. There were 30 key informants, consisting of 9 Maniq people and 21 people
involved in assisting the Maniq, selected by a purposive sampling method. Data were
collected by semi-structured in-depth interviews together with non-participatory
observation and field notes. Data were analyzed by content analysis.
The findings revealed 3 characteristics of the symptoms and the
management of the Maniq’ sickness.
1. The sickness managed by traditional wisdom: These include minor
sickness that occur often and can be managed by the Maniq themselves. H erbal
medicines, various parts of animals, salt and ashes are used for treatment. Laying near
the fire is also another treatment option used by the Maniq. They also buy medicine
themselves. Spells are also used with herbs, or spells are used alone for treatment.
In addition to the management of physical sickness, the Maniq have also managed
their psychological symptoms through consultation, singing and playing the musical
instruments made by themselves for relaxation. Assistance and support in accordance
with the Maniq’s way of life should be provided.
2. The sickness managed primarily by the Maniq and the modern
health system: The Maniq usually treat these sickness by the wisdom passed down
from their ancestors, such as using herbal medicines, various parts of animals and
magic spells for about 2-3 days. If the symptoms are not improved, the patients will
be taken to Tambon Health Promoting Hospital or hospital. Assistance should be
provided for the prevention and management of sickness.
3. The sickness managed entirely by the modern health system: The
Maniq have no experiences and knowledge passed down from their ancestors for
treating these sickness. They usually use herbal medicines for primary treatment for 3-7 days. If the patients are at risk of disabilities and death, the community leaders will
take them to the hospital to receive treatment with modern medicine. The support
meeting the Maniq’s needs when they are sick should be provided. Moreover, they
should be supported with the things they lack according to their way of life. Also, their
lifestyles must not be changed much, just to adapt to survive.
This study is beneficial to the policymakers and the stakeholders in
developing, promoting, supporting and assisting the Maniq’s sickness management
systematically in line with their lifestyles and needs on the basis of human dignity and
equality.
