Abstract
The purposes of this study were to investigate 1) personal factors and economic factors and their relationships with outstanding debts among members of Bang Klam Agricultural Cooperative, Ltd., Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province; 2) factors affecting outstanding debts among members of Bang Klam Agricultural Cooperative, Ltd., Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province; and 3) characteristics of members who had outstanding debts and ways to reduce outstanding debts among members of Bang Klam Agricultural Cooperative, Ltd., Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province. The study was conducted in four sub-districts: Bang Klam, Tha Chang, Mae Thom, and Ban Han. Data were collected through asking 267 members of Bang Klam Agricultural Cooperative, Ltd., and the data were analyzed using the R program, frequency, percentage, chi-square test, odds ratio, and logistic regression analysis. Data were also collected through in-depth interviews with 16 members, and 4 officers of the cooperative. Then content analysis was performed with the data.
The results of the study were as follows.
1. The personal factors significantly associated with outstanding debts of most members (50.56%) of Bang Klam Agricultural Cooperative, Ltd., were age, the number of income earners in the household, total household income, and total household expense.
2. Three factors significantly affecting outstanding debts of members of the cooperative at the level .0001, .01, and .05 were: the total household income, the number of income earners in the household, and the age of members, respectively. Members who were with a high chance of having outstanding debts were as follows. Members whose household had only one income earners had 4.60 times (95% CI 1.70, 12.43); members with the total household income of 15,001--20,000 Baht had 3.92 times (95% CI 1.83, 8.40); members with the total household income below 15,000 Baht had 3.52 times (95% CI 1.20, 10.30); members in the age range 41-50 years old had 2.61 times (95% CI 1.40, 4.89); and members whose household had two income earners had 2.51 times (95% CI 1.02, 6.19) higher chance to have outstanding debts.
3. The characteristics of members who had outstanding debts were: members in the age range 41-50 years old due to easy opportunity to access capital sources and their high material value; members from households with only one income earner with only one way of earnings; members whose total household income in the range 15,001--20,000 Baht with household expenses and who were rubber farmers. Five ways to reduce outstanding debts were found: loan interest reduction; loan modification; checking the purposes of loan use; planning and providing members with knowledge about debt repayment; and promoting members to keep household accounts.
