Abstract
The purpose of this descriptive research was to explore the situation
and a model of traditional Thai medicine in community hospitals. Data were collected using qualitative research methods through a questionnaire, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The sample group consisted of administrators and practitioners in 14 community hospitals, personnel responsible for traditional Thai medicine of Sonkhla Provincial Public Health Office, and Faculty of Traditional Thai Medicine, Prince of Songkla University.
The study found that sciences of Thai medicine, Thai pharmacy, Thai midwifery and Thai massage were used in providing services in the aspects of promotion, prevention, treatment, and health rehabilitation. All the hospitals used the science of Thai massage; only two hospitals did not use sciences of Thai medicine and Thai pharmacy; and three did not use the science of Thai midwifery. Factors affecting service provision were policy, manpower, budget and body of knowledge, respectively.
All the community hospitals should use sciences of Thai medicine, Thai pharmacy, Thai midwifery and Thai massage in providing services in the aspects of promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. All the hospitals should have clear policy, more manpower, adequate budgets; personnel potential should be developed in terms of increasing and reviving the body of knowledge that support the use of sciences of Thai traditional medicine such as reviving local wisdom (the body of knowledge about traditional Thai medicine), and training and developing potential in Thai traditional medicine.
