Abstract
The study of supernatural characters and belief in Tri Apirum’s novels aimed 1. to analyse the important role of the supernatural characters in supernatural mystery novels of Tri Apirum 2. to analyse supernatural belief and intertextuality appearing in the supernatural mystery novels of Tri Apirum by collecting data from 3 novels consisting of Anintita, Nakee and Tayat Asoon. The result of the study were as follows : 1. the supernatural characters have 2 important roles comprising of (1) the role of supernatural characters in expressing the conflict leading to theme which can be found in 4 types, namely, the role in expressing conflict between the supernatural characters and themselves, the role in expressing conflict between the supernatural characters and supernature, the role in expressing conflict between the supernatural characters and human, and the role in expressing conflict between the supernatural characters and supernatural rule, (2) the role of supernatural characters in expressing symbolic meaning leading to essence of novel which can be found in 3 issues, namely, Anintita: the surrender to “fear”, Nakee: the value of “love” and attempt to “refrain”, and Chao Khon : “the harm of revenge” caused by the cycle of status inequality, 2. in terms of supernatural belief and intertextuality appearing in the supernatural mystery novels of Tri Apirum, the result revealed that (1) there are 7 genres of belief consisting of mythological belief, astrological belief, superstitious belief, Buddhism belief, belief about psychic power, belief about gods or sacred powers, and belief about ghosts or spirits, (2) by analysing the intertextuality of belief in Thai culture to novel theme, the researcher found that the author used 2 types of Thai cultural belief including using the belief in the novel directly and using the belief in the novel by adaption. The results of this study have reflected that the author of these three supernatural novels presented the supernatural characters and the variety of beliefs for dramatic effect and entertainment. However, he was clearly aware of Buddhism in terms of the three marks of existence and karma to stimulate that no one can escape nature rule.
