Abstract
The objectives of this research were to study 1) parenting stress of adolescent
mothers receiving support grants for raising newborn babies in Phatthalung Province;
2) the relationship between characteristics of mothers and children, social support factors and the stress of adolescent mothers; 3) factors affecting parenting stress of adolescent mothers; and 4) guidelines for the management of parenting stress of adolescent mothers. The data were collected from 220 participants and analyzed by using Pearson correlation and multiple regressions.
The results of the research were as follows.
1) Adolescent mothers who receive support grants for raising newborn babies in Phatthalung Province had a moderate level of stress (X - 2.74, S.D= 0.42).
2) The feeling of health burdens (r = 0.270), the feeling of financial burdens (r
*= 0.240), and the feeling of lack of self-esteem (r = 0.225) were positively correlated
with the parenting stress at the significance level of. 001. The perception of lack of
parenting ability (r = 0.214) was positively correlated with the parenting stress at the
significance level of .01. The lack of emotional support (r = 0. 137) and evaluation
support (r = 0.135) was positively correlated with the parenting stress at the significance
level of .05. However, the feeling of daily chore burdens, emotional tantrums in newborn babies, the lack of information and news support, and the lack of material
support were not significantly correlated with parenting of adolescent mothers receiving support grants for raising newborn babies in Phatthalung Province.
3) Three factors affecting parenting stress of adolescent mothers at the significance level of. 001 were the feeling of financial burdens, the feeling of health problems, and the feeling of lack of self-esteem. The feeling of financial burdens (B =
0. 193) had the highest effect on parenting stress followed by the feeling of health
burdens (B = 0.172) and the feeling of lack of self-esteem (B = 0.093) respectively.
4) The vital guidelines for dealing with parenting stress of adolescent mothers are doing activities in order to relieve stress, seeking advice from a reliable person and expressing their feelings and emotions to trusted people.
