Abstract
Abstract
The four objectives of this study were to investigate: 1) the level of
ethical leadership; 2) the level of employee counterproductive work behaviors toward the organization and colleagues; 3) the influence of ethical leadership on the two types of counterproductive work behaviors; and 4) the mediating role of trust according to social exchange theory. This quantitative study employed a questionnaire to collect data from 236 employees of Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO). The data were analyzed using percentage, mean, and standard deviation; and multiple regression analysis to test the hypotheses.
The study found that the average level of ethical leadership was high (3.55) and the average level of trust in the leaders was also high (3.48). However, counterproductive work behaviors toward the organization and colleagues were at very low levels 1.38 and 1.24, respectively. Regarding analysis of the relationships between ethical leadership and the two types of counterproductive work behaviors, it was found that the length of work under the present supervisors had a positive relationship with trust in the leaders. For ethical leadership, it has a positive relationship with trust in the leaders. Nevertheless, ethical leadership and trust in the leaders were not associated with counterproductive work behaviors toward the organization. Additionally, it was found that being a star or talent in the organization had a negative relationship with counterproductive work behaviors. At the end of this study, the benefits it contributes to literature on ethical leadership, employee counterproductive work behavior and trust are acknowledged.
