Abstract
This study aims to collect qualitative and quantitative data related to beach litter from tourism activities in Phuket and suggest management methods that are appropriate to the context of the beaches in Phuket. The researcher conducted a random sampling of litter at Nai yang, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon Yai and Kata Yai beaches between March – May 2019. The study site was divided into two parts namely the beachfront (the water line to the vegetation area) and the back of the beach (the areas that are covered by vegetation and man–made structure). The analysis provided the total amount of litter and density per square meter, the Clean–Coast Index (CCI), physical characteristics, and perspetives of the beach operators. The results in this study recorded a total of 145 categories of litter which can be grouped into 9 types. From 5,455 items collected from the study areas, plastic was the most abundant item (81.37%) with cigarette butts being the highest in number, followed by nylon rope, plastic scrap, plastic packaging, and bags respectively. The beach with the highest Clean–Coast Index (CCI) or “very dirty” classification was the back of Kata Yai beach (92.59) with the average density of beach litter being 4.63 items per m2. This study supports the measures to reduce single use plastic consumption and smoking in the beach area especially in the recreation zone behind the beach. There shoud be sorting areas for various types of waste such as cigarette butts or recyclable items namely plastic water bottles, rubber shoes, aluminum cans, glass or ceramics. There should be a separation of trash collection in the community. Local authorities and responsible organizations should implement clear zoning for activities and organize staff or volunteer groups to clean the area on a daily basis. Signages and awareness events should be provided and publicized in the beach area to promote sustainable management of tourism and natural resources.
