Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate current practices, problems and wants in the Implementation of Mini English Program (MEP) in 12 vocational institutions in Southern Thailand. The subjects were 4 administrators, 32 teachers and 132 students. The instruments included the documents analysis form, classroom observation form one, questionnaire for teachers, and one for students and semi-structured interviews with administrators, teachers and students. Qualitative data were summarised. Percentage, means and standard deviation were used to analyse quantitative data.
The findings of current practices in implementing MEP in vocational institutions in southern Thailand were as follow. Students' need analysis was not conducted prior to the start of the program. Nine institutions managed to have both Thai and foreign teachers in the program while three institutions had foreign teachers only. Most teachers had English teaching qualifications. Authentic materials, authentic tasks such as role-play, demonstration and authentic assessment could be observed in classroom practice eventhough not at a high degree. Moreover, all the institutions offered English camps to enhance students' English proficiency.
Regarding the stated problems, they were related to the lack of students' needs analysis; an inadequacy of textbooks, visual aids and authentic materials; the teachers' lacking of expertise in subject-specific areas; and insufficient budgets for administration. The identified wants included the recruitment of learners whose English proficiency is sufficient; the provision of practical subject matter courses, standard textbooks, teacher-training in English for specific purposes, and more extra-curricular activities enhancing English language use.
