Abstract

Abstract

This research aims at developing cost-effective tubular Al2O3 membranes support via agar gelcasting. Rice starch is introduced into the Al2O3 membrane support layer, ranging from 0 to 10 wt%, as a pore-forming agent to improve permeability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis reveals a structure characterized by large pores resulting from starch decomposition and small interparticle voids. With an increase in rice starch content, there is a concurrent elevation in drying and firing shrinkage, apparent porosity, and a reduction in bulk density and mechanical strength. Of particular significance is the performance of membranes containing 8 wt% rice starch, which exhibit a permeability of 0.23 Lh?m?bar? under a pressure of 2.5 bar.
