Abstract
This research aimed to study the use of social media and the factors
contributing to upper secondary participants' oral proficiency. The participants were 35 upper secondary level students from Hatyaiwittayalai School, Songkhla, selected by purposive sampling. Their oral proficiency was rated above Band 6 out of 8 based on TOEIC assessment criteria. Research instruments 'consisted of a screening
questionnaire, a speaking test, a questionnaire on the use of social media in contributing oral proficiency and a semi-structured interview. Data was statistically computed to determine the frequency, percentage, means, and standard deviation.
The four types of social media were found, in order of popularity, to
help the participants develop their oral abilities: video media (YouTube and Netflix), texts with pictures (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), audio media JOOX, TED Talk and Podcast), and voice and video calls (Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype and Line). The most used media was Youtube; all the 35 participants learned English by watching movies on YouTube. The participants reported that social media offered them a variety of English used around the world and that the contents on social media were interesting so they were motivated to develop their language skills. Besides, there's motivation, grit, and willingness to communicate of them were at a high level. Having a high level of grit and motivation could affect participants to succeed in developing English oral proficiency very well.
