Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the demand of patient's spiritual care
needs and the spiritual care received in 97 patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving hemodialysis (HD) from five hospitals between February and March, 2017. Research instruments consisted of two parts: (1) demographic data and (2) spiritual care needs and spiritual care received scale. The content validity of all instruments were examined by three experts. The spiritual care needs and spiritual care received scale was tested for reliability with Cronbach's alpha coefficients of, .89 and .92, respectively. Data analysis was performed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test.
The results were as follows: the mean score of spiritual care needs was at high level (X= 2.44, SD = .24). The mean score of spiritual care received was at high level (X= 2.43, SD = .22). In addition, there was no statistically significant difference between spiritual care needs and spiritual care received in patients with ESRD receiving HD (p > .05).
According to the study findings, the spiritual needs of patients with ESRD
receiving HD should be enhanced in order for them to live better and face their chronic illness and its treatment.
