Abstract

Design and construction of Continuous Deglycerolization reactor for a transesterification process was investigated. A pilot CD reactor of 40 litre was fabricated for the first transesterification reaction while the second reactor was CSTR and this set of equipment can produce ethyl ester more than 60 litre/hour. Three feedstocks were used in this experiment, namely, refined palm oil, waste cooking oil and esterified palm oil. The 2 important operating parameters, molar ratio of ethanol to oil (5.5-7.0) and the amount of KOCH3 catalyst (0.6-1.4 %wt) were studied. The temperature of the reaction was kept constant at 60 degree Celsius and the retention time was 20-30 minute. All of the feedstocks could be produced to a high quality of ethyl ester biodiesel having ester content higher than 96.5%. The yields of 3 feedstocks are in a narrow range of 94.5-96.0%. An economic feasibility was also investigated; the waste cooking oil feedstock gave the highest return of investment (ROI). Esterified palm oil is also an attractive feedstock but refined palm oil has a negative result from the today market price. This set of equipment also could be used to produce methyl ester.
