Abstract
This predictive research aimed to determine the level of depression and predicting factors of depression in pregnant teenagers. The Sample was 298 pregnant teenagers attending the antenatal clinic of Hatyai Hospital, Songkhla Hospital, and community hospitals with a total of 15 hospitals. Instruments for data collection comprised a set of questionnaires including 1) demographic recording form, 2) life events questionnaire, 3) family support questionnaire, 4) marital relationship questionnaire, 5) self-esteem questionnaire, and 6) depression questionnaire. Content of all questionnaires was validated by a panel of 3 experts. The set of questionnaire 3, 4, and 6 had Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of .91, .86, and .93 respectively. The set of questionnaire 2 and 5 had test-retest reliability of .86 and .82 respectively. Data were analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression.
Research results revealed that the level of depression in pregnant teenagers was at a moderate level (M = 18.86, SD = 11.17) life events, marital relationship, and self- esteem together could significantly explain 32.9% of the variance of depression in pregnant teenagers (R2 = .329, p < .001). The findings of this research could be used as baseline information for developing an appropriate model to promote depression prevention in pregnant teenagers.
