Abstract
Abstract
This quasi-experimental, two-group pretest-posttest research, aimed to examine
the effect of an Islamic-based psychoeducation program on caregivers caring of children with Intellectual disability (ID) comorbid with Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Symptoms (ADHD). Participants comprised 32 Islamic primary caregivers taking care children with ID comorbid with ADHD, studying at two provincial special education centers in lower southern of Thailand. The participants were assigned into matched pairs based on sex and education of caregiver and age and SNAP-IV score (short form) of children and randomly allocated to one or other of 2 groups. There were 26 participants in the intervention group and 26 participants in the non-intervention control group. Research instrument consisted of; 1) an Islamic-based psychoeducation program based on conceptual framework of Anderson and et al. as well as Islamic principles, and included 6 sessions, each session of 90 - 120 minutes, twice a week ever 3 weeks; 2) demographic data questionnaire; and 3) caregiving behaviors questionnaire. Content validity of the 3 parts was verified by 3 experts. Reliability of the caregiving behaviors questionnaire was analyzed using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, yielding a value of .85. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test under the acceptable assumption test.
The result showed that the mean score of caregiver behaviors of children with ID comorbid with ADHD after participating in the program was significantly higher than that before participating the program (M = 57.04, SD = 5.42 vs M = 70.19, SD = 3.94; p < .001). In addition, the mean score of caregiver behaviors of children with ID and ADHD after participating in the program was significantly higher than that of those not participating in the program (M = 70. 19, SD = 3.94 vs M = 55.35, SD = 3.58; p < .001). The results of this study showed that the Islamic-based
psychoeducation program could increase caring behaviors of caregivers taking care of children with ID comorbid with ADHD.
The results of the Islamic-based psychoeducation program could increase caring behaviors taking care children with ID comorbid with ADHD. Therefore, health care personnel should implement the Islamic-based psychoeducation program at other special education centers.
