Abstract

This study aimed to explore the process of conservation and restoration movement for coastal resources among fishers in Chana District, Songkhla Province using qualitative research method. Data were collected from related documents and from the field through participant observations, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Typological analysis and analytic induction were conducted The study found that the process of conservation and restoration movement for coastal resources among fishers in Ban Suankong village began from problems caused by the use of destructive fishing tools that damaged the resources: trawl nets, push nets, electrofishing boats, and pound nets. In the coastal area, there are also other activities, especially shooting drills into the artificial reef areas and petroleum exploration that have resulted in the rapid decrease of marine resources and direct impacts on fishers. As a result, Suankong locals began their movement by obstructing and challenging the political system. They organized a protest rally, closed Songkhla estuary, obstructed and chased away people involved in the destructive activities, and used normal political strategies including negotiating, and submitting letters to relevant organizations. Furthermore, their movement included collaboration with the stat in sustainable coastal management such as cleaning artificial reefs, helping and caring for turtles and dolphins, establishing community organizations, promoting Chana Sea to be a source of food production and community learning resources, and organizing an activity called "Ahboy Mah!" (Wow!) to inform the public and promote conservation and restoration of Chana coastal resources.
