Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to test the effect of an education and progressive muscle relaxation program on stress among pregnant women with preterm labor pain. The sample consisted of 50 pregnant women with preterm labor pain admitted at a tertiary hospital between January and June 2016. They were purposively selected and assigned into an experimental group (n = 25) and a control group (n = 25). The control group received standard care, while the experimental group received the education and progressive muscle relaxation program. The experimental instrument consisted of the education and progressive muscle relaxation program. The data-collecting instruments consisted of (I) a personal data form, and (2) a self-scoring stress questionnaire. The experimental-control instruments consisted of progressive muscle relaxation form. The validity of the instruments in this study except for the self-scoring stress questionnaire were approved validity by three experts. The reliability of the self-scoring stress questionnaire was examined using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, yielding a value of 82. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the t-test. The results revealed that: 1) Pregnant women with preterm labor pain who received the education and progressive muscle relaxation had a mean score of stress after intervention (M = 22.04, SD = 1.27) significantly lower than before intervention (M = 26.24, SD = 1.45) (p < .001) 2) Pregnant women with preterm labor pain who received the education and progressive muscle relaxation had a mean score of stress (M = 22.04, SD - 1.27) significantly lower than that of pregnant women with preterm labor pain who received standard care (M/ = 26.80, SD = 1.76) (p < .001) The result showed that the education and progressive muscle relaxation program could reduce stress of pregnant women with preterm labor pain. Therefore, this program should be applied to reduce stress for pregnant women with preterm labor pain.
