Abstract

This research aimed to explore the masculine virtues in the Language for Life Series �Pasa Patee� of the Thai language textbooks at elementary levels 1-6 through the main male characters in the textbooks. The research data was based on 88 narratives in the Language for Life Series �Pasa Patee� of the Thai language textbooks at elementary levels 1-6. Documentary research methodology was employed. The data was analyzed using descriptive analysis, followed by a summary and discussion of the research results.The research results revealed that the Language of the Thai language textbooks at elementary reflect the characteristics of good masculine virtues through their male characters in three age groups: 1. good masculine virtues during childhood and youth, consisting of 1.1) being a leader in a group of friends, 1.2) being a good role model for friends, 1.3) caring for and protecting others, 1.4) expressing empathy to others, 1.5) being kind; 1.6) being forgiving; 1.7) accepting mistakes; 1.8) having effort and determination; and 1.9) being mindful and careful; 2. good masculine virtues during adulthood, consisting of 2.1) having leadership skills, 2.2) proving advice to others, 2.3) being committed to careers, 2.4) helping society, 2.5) being loyal to the nation and monarchy, and 2.6) expressing empathy to others; 3. good masculine virtues during old age, consisting of 3.1) being mentally dependent, 3.2) educating children, and 3.3) helping society.In addition, the textbooks contain another aspect concerning the issue of deficiencies in masculine morality, which is the opposite of good masculine virtues, in two male age groups: 1. deficient masculine virtues during childhood and youth, including 1.1) doing illegal or evil activities, 1.2) lacking kindness, 1.3) lacking responsibility for duties, and 1.4) leading life in wrongful ways; and 2. deficient masculine morality during adulthood, including 2.1) lacking empathy, and 2.2) committing deceits and frauds.In terms of knowledge, the virtues of masculinity reflected in the textbooks reveal that the cultivation of masculine morality has been determined through the social construction process instilled through the Thai language textbooks in their young learners.
