Abstract
The purposes of this research were to study the needs for competency
development of village health volunteers in Muang district, Phuket province and to compare
the differences of the level of competency development needs of village health volunteers
in Muang district, Phuket province divided by personal and environmental factors. The
population used in this study was 290 people. The tool used in this research was a
questionnaire for data collection. This questionnaire was adjusted from various research
studies. Each questionnaire was divided into sections as follow. Part 1 was a check-list for
personal information of the respondents inquiring about gender, age, education level,
occupation, monthly income, work retention and working area. Part 2 was about
competency development needs which consisted of knowledge, skills and competency /
qualification. Part 3 consisted of open-ended questions inquiring about opinions and
suggestions on the needs for competency development of village health volunteers in
Muang district, Phuket province. This part was to justify their opinions and to make
information more accurate and complete. The data obtained from the questionnaire were
then processed by using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) version 16.0
statistical analysis program to find the frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean and standard
deviation. The level of competency development needs of village health volunteers was
compared and analyzed with the needs for competency development of village health
volunteers in Muang district, Phuket province classified by personal factors by using
Independent Samples t-test (Two Independent Samples) and F-test.
The study found that the respondents were 29 male and 261 female, most of
them were between 31-40 years of age. The majority of their education was at vocational
level – Mattayom 6 and bachelor's degree. Most of them worked for private businesses with
a monthly income of 15,001 - 20,000. The majority of work retention (the period of being a
village health volunteer member) was 1 - 5 years and most of them worked in the area of
Talat Yai sub-district.
The study found that overall, the needs for competency development of
village health volunteers in Muang district, Phuket province was at a moderate level. When
considering based on each aspect, the data showed that, in descending order of means from
high to low, the village health volunteers needed to improve their competency /
qualifications, skills and knowledge, respectively. When comparing the needs for
competency development of village health volunteers in Muang district, Phuket province
classified by personal factors, it found that the factors that were statistically significant were
age, education level, occupation, income and working areas, and the factor that was not
statistically significant was work retention.
