Abstract

Thailand's Deep South, where there has been ongoing unrest throughout decades, has become a systemic phenomenon emerging from a host of interrelated factors. For example, DusunNyor Rebellion, the loss of Haji Sulong, protest in Pattani 1975, and raiding of a Thai Army depot. Thus, many separatist movements were found to secede from Thailand through military and political means. The Patani United Liberation Organization or PULO is one of the movements toengage in attempts to fight for the independence of Thailand's predominantly Malay Muslim south.PULO's platform is highlighted by its Islamic nationalist goals. This is because the principle of PULO based on the multiculturalism, U-bang-ta-pak-ma. U-bang-ta- pak-ma is a combination of four words; there are 1) Ugama (religion) which is referring to two domains of relationship; the first one is a relationship between human and human for non-Muslim people and the second one is a relationship between God and human for Muslim people, 2) Bangsa (nationality), 3) Tanah air (territory), and 4) Perikemanusian (humanity) which is referring to human's prestige and international law-abidingness. PULO is considered as one of the powerful and influential separatist group in both national and international society. The problems faced for this study is that literature reviewing. This is because PULO is an illegal organization. The objective of this study is to investigate the ideal principle and concept of PULO which is followed the Islamic rules before transforming to multiculturalism principle.
