Abstract

The research aimed to study 1) the effects of practicing English speaking skills via Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) 2) the students' learning behavior through CAI 3) the students' opinion toward practicing speaking English via CAI and 4) the factors affecting the practice of speaking English through CAI of Mathayomsuksa 6 students. Forty-one students were randomly selected to participate in the study by the voluntary sampling method. The research instruments comprised the speaking pre-test, post-test, learning log and 2 five-point rating scale questionnaires asking students attitude toward improving speaking English via CAI and factors affecting the practice of speaking English through CAI. The statistics for data analysis were mean, standard deviation and percentage. Research findings showed that 1) students' post-experiment English speaking ability increased over their pre-experimental ability at the .01 level of statistical significance. 2) According to the students' learning log, most of students focused on listening and vocabulary however, they identified that they still had the vocabulary problem that they didn't know the meaning. 3) The students' questionnaire toward practicing speaking English via CAI was at a high level (X=4.13, S.D.=0.83). 4) The factor affecting the practice of English speaking efficiency through CAI were content related to everyday life situation provided in CAI (X =4.49, S.D. =0.60), content that is useful for speaking practice (X =4.29, S.D.=0.72) and teachers who can give advice and assist students while practicing (X=4.27, S.D.=0.83)
