Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the board composition characteristics and
investigate their relationship with the Balanced Scorecard performance for the companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The research is based on the annual reports of 2018 for a total sample of 463 companies from 7 industries. Descriptive statistics analysis and multiple regression analysis have been applied. The mean board size is 10 members and on average 41 percent of them are independent. In addition, in most listed companies the CEO is not holding the position of chairman. They have on average 7.71 board meetings per year. The Balanced Scorecard performance characteristics are as follows: for finance, the mean return on assets is 7.6 percent; for customers, sales growth is 10.70 percent on average; for internal processes, the mean inventory turnover is 21.67; and, for research and development, employee training hours is 13.40 percent per person per year on average. The proportion of independent board members has been observed to have a significant positive impact on research and development, frequency of board meetings, customers and internal
processes.
