Abstract
The objectives of this study are 1) to study the attitudes in expressing Malayu identity among Muslim juveniles in Pattani Province; The Case of Expression in Malayu Identity of Muslim Youth in multicultural area at Saiburi, Pattani 2) to study the attitudes of civil society toward the identity expression of Malayu youth in Pattani;
The Case of Expression in Malayu Identity of Muslim Youth in multicultural area at Pattani 3) to suggest the expression of Muslim youth's Malayu identity to various sectors to create understanding and promote coexistence in a multicultural society. The qualitative research method is applied in this study, using semi-structured interviews with selected criteria for interviewees based on juvenile and civil society participation in the event. The key informant is the event's participant, event’s leaders, researching documents and related research to synthesize, analyze, find results and provide suggestions.
The research revealed that some participants in the activities received news by word of mouth from their seniors, friends, electronic media, and social media platforms. As for coordination with local people, we found that most of the youth thought the event was a Hari Raya celebration that gathers village people and district people to travel to an event’s venue. The purpose of the organizer is to promote
the understanding of Malayu’s Identity to both younger participant’s and the government. The event was held at Wasukri Beach, Sai Buri District, Pattani Province because it was safe and convenient to obtain permission to facilitate an event.
The identities that were expressed include authentic Malayu dress, Panchak Silat performance and the oath of allegiance. Those activities were aimed to value
the Malayu culture and cherish the motherland among the younger generation
that was born into Malayu and believe that youth is the hope of peace. Therefore,
it is considered a peaceful way to explain the identity of Thai’s Malayu. This study provided policy proposal to help establish law and regulation that the governor must willing to support their lifestyle and Muslim identity including being truthful, continue resolve the problem or issue occurs, non-enforcement to apply monoculturalism, leader keeps resolving problem regularly and support activity for children and youth in the area
