Abstract
Abstract
Grief experience perspective from women after spontaneous abortion may differ depending on different culture, religion, and belief. In-depth reflection of grief experience of Muslim women after spontaneous abortion can provide essential information for developing holistic and privacy care plan for them. The study aimed to describe grief experiences of Muslim women after spontaneous abortion. The qualitative descriptive research was conducted in a general hospital in lower southern Thailand. Twelve participants who experienced spontaneous abortion between two months and one year before participating in the study were recruited by purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interview until data saturation. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. Peer debriefing and member checking were employed to enhance the trustworthiness of the data.
Grief experiences comprised three themes: (1) responding to the loss (three subthemes: denying the loss, bereavement for losing expected child, self-blame for causing spontaneous abortion); (2) coping with grief (three subthemes: using religious doctrine to accept the loss, thinking positively about the loss, overcoming the grief by getting support); and (3) love and attachment to a miscarried child (two subthemes: unbreakable bonding, and doing good things for a miscarried child).
The findings of this study can serve as basic information to develop a nursing practice guideline to promote grief coping strategy for Muslim women after spontaneous abortion suitable for cultural and religious context.
