Abstract

The purposes of this research on "Lives of Lottery Retailers" were to explore how people in Wang Saphung, Loei Province enter the process of becoming lottery retailers, and to investigate practices of everyday life amongst lottery retailers in Thung Song District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The data of this qualitative research were collected from related documents, in-depth interviews with seven key informants, and non-participant observations. Then, the data were classified, analyzed, deciphered, interpreted to draw conclusions corresponding with the purposes, and presented with analytical description. 1. Regarding how people entered the process of becoming lottery retailers, it was found that the starting point was that they needed to earn extra income in addition to agricultural income. Then, there were also other causes and factors that made them join the group of lottery retailers in their village. Some of them had relatives who began earning extra income from selling lottery tickets in the village as the first group of lottery retailers in 1995. After that there was a middleman or investor who managed the business in the village and formed a group of relatives and traveled to Thung Song District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province by their own vehicles. After that there were also people who were persuaded by a middleman or investor. They had methods of reducing the cost of traveling to the destiny and changing the prices of lottery tickets. Some lottery retailers were teenagers who wanted to ear income during a school break. These lottery retailers have ways to reduce the cost and know how to cope with the measures and laws concering lottery prices very well. 2. For practices of everyday life amongst lottery retailers in Wang Saphung District, Loei Province, it was found that before becoming lottery retailers, they had different methods of buying lottery tickets book depending on the cost which was an important factor. Some of them received either a personal or organizational quota. Others had buying and selling agreements in advance and had their names on the list of people who were eligible to receive lottery tickets books. Wang Saphung is a central market where middlemen and sales agents sell lottery tickets as retailers. In online reservations through ATMs, there are cheating methods of queuing by writing down names and even hiring people to line up in the queue for them. Moreover, there are selling and buying through the Internet like Facebook and Line. As for their practices of everyday life, there are sales cycles in Wang Saphung, Loei Province where there are negotiations and bargaining about prices, traveling and selling techniques. There are sales to regular customers, sales of beautiful numbers to get more profits, and sales of sets of lottery tickets that retailers themselves arrange into sets of numbers. There are also techniques to make customers pay in cash, installments and daily.
